The first day we did a lot of games and activities with rhythm notation.
We started out with a Rhythm "Treasure" Hunt where students went around to different "islands" and created a rhythm ostinato representing that island. At the end of the hunt they performed their 9 island ostinato for the rest of the class which earned them the chance to find the treasure.
The second day we had a drum circle and played a lot of games and activities in the drum circle. Some favorites were Rumble Ball, Echo Me (on the big drum), Forbidden Rhythm and Rhythm Detective. Students even made their own drum called the Domroo which was great for doing a rhythm wave activity.

I love the idea of games for drum circle day... and was wondering if you could explain a few of the games...rumble ball? and the others you mentioned...
I also do group lessons frequently and would love some new rhythm games for my students to play...

Thanks for your comment. Most of the activities in the drum circle come from the Together in Rhythm book by Kalani (Alfred). I highly recommend it, it also includes a DVD so you can see the activities in action, which I really appreciate.
Rumble Ball is an activity where someone has a ball and what they do with the ball tells the students in the drum circle what to do. For example they may throw it up and while it's going up in the air shakers shake and then as soon as they catch it they hit. Bouncing would be hits, with each bounce, rolling would be shaking the instrument, etc... Fun, fun! :)
